Hi world, I’m Alyssa, the over-caffeinated, adventure-loving, wanderlusting writer behind this portfolio and the founder of communications consulting company Light Roast Media. I have always been a storyteller, whether they’re my own stories about my crazy adventures (ask me about the time I rode on the roof of a public bus up a mountain in the rain in Nepal), or someone else’s.
My writing and social media management expertise includes nonprofit, social advocacy, culture and travel, as well as technology and business. I mean, come on, why choose just one? Professionally, I have gone from corporate communications to the non-stop hustle of the PR agency world, which means I have a love-hate relationship with media pitches. Tweets, newspaper articles, magazine bylines, white papers and blog posts – each one of these is a platform on which to tell a unique story in a unique way.
I’m also an advocate for social justice, immigrant rights and literacy and enjoy volunteering as an ESL teacher through the Minnesota Literacy Council, working with new Americans and non-English speakers. According to Kofi Annan, “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society… Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”
I have an innate sense of curiosity and a severe case of FOMO so, naturally, I quit my full-time PR agency job, took off to Europe and chose to strike out on my own as a freelancer and business owner. A little cliche, but I am a firm believer that experience goes beyond the office, so I’ve embraced the digital nomad lifestyle and am on a mission to frequent every coffee shop in Minneapolis.
